Election Results Explained

Prior to certifying an election, our office ensures that every eligible vote is accounted for. In cases where vote-by-mail ballot envelopes lack or do not match signatures, voters are sent a cure letter providing them with the opportunity to verify and provide their signature. Once remedied, the ballot can be extracted from the envelope and processed for inclusion in the tally. Voters sent a cure letter have until April 2 to rectify these issues.

All election results remain unofficial until the official canvass of the election is completed on or before April 4.

Here is a summary of the results reporting process:

• The first unofficial results tabulation will include vote-by-mail and unscanned vote center ballots received prior to Election Day. This is expected to be released by 8:20 p.m. They will also include votes for qualified write-in candidates.

• Subsequent unofficial election night updates will consist of vote center ballots cast on Election Day, and potentially any vote-by-mail ballots that are ready to be counted.

• Following the closure of vote centers at 8 p.m. on election night, ballots from 148 vote centers across Riverside County will be transported that evening to the Registrar of Voters headquarters for processing.

• Periodic unofficial election night result updates will continue every hour until all vote center ballots are reported, potentially extending until 3 a.m. March 6.

• Additional unofficial election results updates will be posted daily, no later than 6 p.m., excluding Sundays. Further updates may be provided at the discretion of the Registrar of Voters.

• Following election night, expect an increase in voter turnout results as ballots (mail, vote center, Conditional Voter Registration, UOCAVA, cures, etc.) are continuously being incorporated into the daily counts.

• Vote-by-Mail ballots postmarked on Election Day will be accepted through 7 days post-Election Day (March 12).
